The unit was branded under (and is identical to) a variety of names, including Mica Fuzz, Bruno Fuzz Machine, Aria Diamond Fuzz and Fuzz Machine (unbranded).
this was built by Maxon in answer to the Super Fuzz. Maxon is the most underrated of the early Japanese pedal makers. They came up with the Tube Screamer pedal yet everyone still thinks of that pedal as being an Ibanez production. It’s a Maxon designed pedal built for Ibanez. Same as this pedal. Bart’s effects database should specify all of the Maxon made pedals as they built this one under 25-30 different brand names.

When we think of resonator guitars, it is the National and Dobro designs from the late 1920’s that generally come to mind. Indeed, few other names have penetrated this niche market. The Death by Audio Robot is the latest in a line of sonic mayhem inducing pedals from our boys in NYC. The Robot brings Death by Audio into the low-fi, bit-crushing business. This insane pedal is a lo-fi pitch transposer that produces sweet, 8-bit ring mod effects to your guitar. The Robot features four operational modes; Normal, Octave Up, Octave Down, and Arpeggiator.
The Octave Up and Octave Down modes are pretty self explanatory. The Control knob, when fully clockwise, yields either octave up or down depending on the mode. When turned down, it bends the pitch of the octave down so you can dial in the exact tone you want. In Normal mode the Robot acts as a lo-fi fuzz pedal and the Control knob bends the pitch down from clockwise. The amount of fuzz can be further toyed with using the internal gain control. Now the fun part. The Death by Audio Robot also features an arpeggiator. The pitch will arpeggiate in a sequence and the Control knob will adjust the speed of the arpeggiation. The Super FatMan is the evolution of the FatMan envelope filter with the features that filter geeks want most. This is the end all envelope filter pedal. The Controls. The FatMan’s controls are intuitive and effective in sculpting incredible filter sounds. Construction. The Super FatMan is made from milled die-cast aluminum and then painted purple and silkscreened red with two part epoxy paints. This makes the Super FatMan easily stand up to the rigors of the road.
Attack – Adjusts the speed of the filter, and how fast it responds to transients in your playing. Fully slow opens the filter like a nice sweep on the wah pedal. Fully fast will open and close the filter nearly instantly making the attack of each note very pronounced. Fast attack will also move the filter around during note bending and the beating of slightly out of tune notes for spaceshippy sounds. Threshold – Adjusts the volume sensitivity of the filter. Turning it up causes the filter to begin working sooner and at lower levels. This sets the depth that the envelope reaches and how quickly it starts to decay. Sweep Up/Down Switch- Controls where the filter starts and moves to. When in „up“ mode, the filter starts at the lowest frequency and as volume increases, the frequency moves up. When in „down“ mode, the filter is at its max frequency for the range and moves downward as the volume increases. Down acts as a tone compressor. LFO Speed – Controls the speed of the Low Frequency Oscillator, from about .07 Hz (about 14 seconds) to 8Hz. Slower settings produce killer synthy filter sweeps, faster settings give you tremolo or vibrato like sounds. LFO Depth – Attenuates the LFO signal to control how subtle or pronounced you want the LFO to work on the filter. LFO Shape Switch – The LFO will run in Triangle Mode, (always smooth up and down) or Square Mode (full up or full down with no inbetween). Triangle is great for sweeps and more subtle sounds. Square is great when the Depth is turned down and blended with the envelope to produce delay like stuttering in longer notes. To turn the LFO off, put the switch in the middle position (useful when using an expression pedal). Source – This controls how much of the envelope follower is blended with the CV/Expression Pedal input or the LFO. Some very nice sounds come from the careful setting of this control. Range – This rotary switch selects between 12 distinct frequency ranges, controlling the frequency of the filter. The lowest setting goes down to 20Hz and provides movement in the sub-bass frequencies. The highest range tops out at 7kHz. Each range has its own sound and response characteristics. Feedback – This controls how much of the filter is heard at the output. Higher settings produce a sharper resonant peak while lower settings flatten the filter out and make it far more subtle. Filter Mode: LP/BP/HP Switch – This switch selects between the different filter modes. Low Pass mode cuts frequencies above the filter point, producing classic filter tones. Band Pass is more like a traditional wah pedal outputting only the frequencies directly around the filter point. High Pass cuts all frequencies lower than the filter point and creates some very nice tones without any bass. Blend: wet/dry – this blends your dry signal in with the filtered signal. It can help retain your original tone and add just a little filter, or get just the filtered tone. Use in junction with the Filter Phase switch for increased tonal possibility. Filter Phase Switch – This flips the phase of the filtered signal for the blend control. Having an in phase signal adds the frequencies together producing more bass and a more subtle sound. Out of phase subtracts the frequencies from eachother and produces sharper sounds. Bypass – The stomp switch is wired true bypass so only wires touch your tone when the Super FatMan is disabled. Internal Gain – There are two trim pots inside the pedal that control the gain of the wet and dry signals before they are blended. They will be set to unity from the factory, but can be changed if desired. RGB LED – The indicator LED on the Super FatMan is now a multi color (red/green/blue) type that has allowed us to provide visual feedback on how the pedal is working. The LED will light up Blue when the Super FatMan is engaged. The RED part will show the speed and mode of the LFO. The GREEN part will show what the filter is doing (envelope, and LFO). Besides being a cool looking flurry of colors, the LED will help you set the controls to get the sound you want faster. CV Input – This jack allows you to use a standard expression pedal (stereo plug) to control the filter position, or blend it with the envelope and LFO. It provides power to the expression pedal. This can also be used with 0-5 volt CV sources. For +-2.5 volt (moogerfooger and modular gear) CV, a special adapter is required to convert the voltage levels, available from WMD for $30. The Epiphone Hummingbird PRO Acoustic/Electric guitar brings the legendary country/rock „Hummingbird“ into the 21st century with the new Shadow ePerformer preamp and Shadow NanoFlex pickup system.
First introduced in 1960, the square shouldered Hummingbird quickly became a classic thanks to Keith Richards of The Rolling Stones, who used a Hummingbird for rhythm on early Stones hits like „Satisfaction,“ „Play With Fire,“ and „Under My Thumb.“ There are also many classic photographs of Keith using a Hummingbird on sessions for Exile on Main Street, Goat’s Head Soup, and Sticky Fingers. Today, the Hummingbird is still a go-to acoustic for rockers like Noel Gallagher, Sheryl Crow, and Kid Rock when they need a rhythm guitar with smooth action and superb “woody” tone that’s full of character.
On its own, the Hummingbird PRO Acoustic/Electric can drive an all-acoustic band or be front and center at a picking party with its sweet, balanced tone. Solid Spruce Tonewood The Hummingbird PRO Acoustic/Electric features a solid spruce top. Spruce is a rich and complex tonewood that begins to breathe and improve with age. The more you play, the better it sounds! The body and neck are made from select mahogany. The Hummingbird PRO neck has a classic SlimTaper D profile and features a 24.75″ scale and is attached to the body with a glued-in dovetail joint. The rosewood fingerboard has pearloid parallelogram inlays, 20 medium frets, a 12″ radius, and a 1.68″ nut. There is single ply white binding on the fingerboard and 5-ply white & black binding on the body top while the back of the body has single ply white binding. The Hummingbird PRO has the classic sloped dovewing headstock has the “Epiphone“ logo in white. The Hummingbird PRO Acoustic/Electric’s reverse belly rosewood bridge has a compensated saddle for smooth action and intonation. The Shadow NanoFlex pickup system is under the saddle and the classic Hummingbird/flower tortoise shell style pickguard is easy to spot on stage or across a room. Process The Keb‘ Mo‘ Signature Bluesmaster is hand-finished in a process that demands several coats and many hours. Unlike many other manufacturers who settle for a polyurethane finish, Gibson opts for a nitrocellulose finish that will encourage the natural vibration of the instrument for a purer tone. In addition, a nitro finish is very porous and actually gets thinner over time. That way your guitar’s wood can breathe and age beautifully. Neck Wood The neck is made from quartersawn solid mahogany. The quartersawn grain orientation produces superior strength and resonance, and is preferred in the necks of high-end acoustic guitars. Truss Rod Gibson’s traditional truss rod, found in most all of their guitars, is highly responsive to the individual adjustments you’ll want to make to personalize and optimize string action and sustain. Profile The guitar’s neck is carved to a custom Keb‘ Mo‘-designed sculpted V profile. Headstock Shape and Angle The headstock is carved in the style of Gibson’s Advanced Jumbo with tapered edge, and is pitched at the vintage-correct 17-degree back angle. Logo The Gibson logo is inlaid in mother of pearl across the top of the Keb‘ Mo‘ Bluesmaster’s headstock, which also carries the traditional mother-of-pearl crown inlay. A slightly modified take on the classic Standard model, the Gibson J-45 Ebony is a visually striking and incredible sounding guitar.
The main differences between this model and a standard model are subtle, but certainly notable. The Gibson J-45 Ebony does not have an on-board pickup system, although the fantastic projection and sound make it a great choice as a recording guitar and some highly professional sounds are easily achievable. The Double Feature is a fuzz and fixed wah pedal with striking looks and stunning sound.
The Fuzz side of the pedal features a raunchy, original design fuzz that is powered by a pair of stable vintage Russian germanium transistors which are driven into fuzz by a specially selected and slew rate limited opamp. The result is a fantastic, focused fuzz with plenty of output volume and sustain. Volume, Tone and Gain controls offer plenty of pleasing tonal flexibility.
The fuzz has a high input impedance and low output impedance which makes it play nice with buffered signal chains, wireless units and switching devices. The filter side of the pedal is a fixed wah. Many classic lead tones were recorded with a wah left in one position instead of being rocked back and forwards. This is commonly referred to as ʻfixedʼ or ʻparkedʼ wah. Unlike a traditional, large Wah Pedal where you have to move the pedal around to find the exact tone you are looking for when playing, the Double Feature allows you to dial in the ʻSweet Spotʼ using the Frequency Control. You can then access this tone by simply turning the pedal on and off using the Filter foot-switch.

The latest pedal from Empress is called the Nebulus which is a Chorus, Vibrato and Flanger pedal in one, but that’s not all, it has 3 submodes per effect and the Vibrato effect has a Vibe and Rotary submode so much more than just the kind of wobbly pitch Vibrato effect you might be thinking of.
The layout is pretty simple, the Mix control allows you to blend the clean signal with the affected signal and then the rate, depth and output controls are pretty self explanatory. Above these controls you have a set of mini toggle switches, the first is the mode selector (Chorus, Vibrato or Flanger), the second is a Submode control (a,b or c), a tone control (Clean, Bright or Warm) and a Special control (none, little or lots) and this control affects different parameters depending on the submode. The way to find out what each submode is and what the special control does is to view what I call the Effect matrix on the bottom of the pedal, Empress users will already be very familiar with this feature as it is used on all multi-function pedals:

The Xotic RC S[cott]H[enderson] has arrived, and it builds on the already great and unparalleled RC Booster of yore. Many „signature models“ simply add a name and be done with it. However, that’s just not Xotic’s style.
The RC SH takes the same gorgeous clean boost circuit as the original and adds a second Gain  knob along with a second footswitch to toggle between Gain 1 and Gain 2. That’s right, now two different Gain levels are footswitchable for a much more versatile pedal—works GREAT before an amp switcher box.
The original RC Booster adds as much as 20 decibels of super-clean boost (remember, RC stands for „Real Clean“) along with a two-band active EQ to cut or boost bass or treble by up to ±15 decibels. There’s plenty of boost available on tap by goosing the Volume control with the Gain control rolled back, but the Gain control is the magic dial, hence the idea to include two of them. It adds just a little transparent grit to the circuit for a fine low-gain overdrive sound. The Chrome finished RC SH is super limited and once they’re gone, that’s it! Jack Casady, electric rock bass player extraordinaire, worked closely with Gibson and Epiphone to create this tasty signature model. It’s a long-scale, hollowbody electric bass constructed loosely around his vintage 1972 Gibson Les Paul Signature bass, discovered in a New York instrument shop in the mid ’80s. Starting from there, Jack spent a lot of energy working with a pickup designer from Epiphone putting together a new humbucker to reside in his signature model. Together they nailed down a passive pickup and control section that delivered tone so pure and natural it’ll give you goose bumps. The pickup is a special low-impedance model (the JCB-1), which produces a bass sound high impedance pickups and active electronics can’t match. The controls — a volume, tone, and versatile VariTone knob — produce enough variation for any situation. The bass has a unique and high-quality transformer with a 3-way impedance selector which eliminates the need for active circuitry while giving the low-impedance signal from the pickup a boost. The pickup impedance selector (VariTone) allows for sounds from clear and clean with acoustic vibe to deep, round, and growling rock authority. The body construction is unique, too. It’s not a true semi-hollow or hollow body, but a hybrid that combines the best from both designs. Under the bridge is a mahogany center block that adds sustain and helps to fight feedback. Antichthon is the ancient Greek word for “Counter-World,” another Earth which lies beyond the sun. The Catalinbread Antichthon attempts to expound on just what this world might look like. Catalinbread’s approach to the Antichthon questions the way we might make music, perceive sounds and derive inspiration in a world that is, in all facets, the polar opposite of our own.
For starters, the Antichthon is controlled by the guitar’s volume knob, instead of by the knobs on the pedal. The guitar’s volume knob is more of an expression control than the pedal’s dials, which are meant to be set and left alone. The core of the Antichthon is three separate modes that can be achieved through different knob settings, then controlled by the guitar.
Mode 1 is a dynamic fuzzed-out tremolo. The guitar’s volume knob controls the speed and sound of the tremolo instead of the pedal’s actual controls. The tremolo is very interesting, it’s very choppy and rhythmic, an effect that is certainly apropos to the concept of opposites. The fuzz sound itself is full of even-order harmonics, so it never sounds cloying or harsh. Mode 2 is an otherworldly tone generator, and it will work without any input from the player. However, it’s when you add in your guitar’s signal that makes it interesting. Your guitar and the pedal’s tone meld together to create all sorts of interesting and inspiring sounds. From sub-bass tones to piercing horn sounds, there isn’t much outside the realm of possibility. Mode 3 is a harmonic fuzz-overdrive. This setting is more familiar, and usually seems like an add-on to some of the more “experimental” effects out there. However, this one is truly great, like a time portal back to our Earth and more familiar surroundings. Richie Kotzen is a guitarist that through his many years of incredible work with different bands has forged his own unique blend of soul, funk, pop, rock and metal. Richie puts comfort while playing above pretty much anything else. At the end of the day he wants his guitars to remain in tune and stay out of the way so his hands are free to move. That is why it uses a lightweight Ash body with strong body curves and topped with laminated flame maple for a killer look. The neck is the really interesting part however as Richie actually prefers a very thick neck. In fact this is probably the largest neck Fender produce for any of their production guitars. Even with its massive size though it is still incredibly comfortable to play even with regular sized hands. The Hardware When building this guitar they tried out many different pickups but none really hit the right note. So in the end they went to DiMarzio and got a set of custom single coils made and they sound incredible. A punchy split single-coil P Bass middle pickup is joined by a growling Jazz Bass neck pickup in an unbeatable pairing that combines the best of both sonic worlds. Master volume and tone controls, along with a conventional three-way pickup switch get you to all available sounds.
Not only is the 30 in. scale more comfortable for smaller hands, it reduces string tension, creating a looser playing feel that lends itself to nimble playing styles while adding a fat, “blooming” quality to the lower notes and sweetening the higher notes. Topped by a 9.5 in.-radius rosewood fingerboard with 19 medium jumbo frets, the “C”-shaped maple neck is comfortable for all playing styles. This bass’ smaller body easily fits those with smaller frames while maintaining Fender’s classic stylistic appeal, and is also great for energetic stage performances thanks to its light weight. The Century is one of Epiphone’s oldest models in their catalogue. It may not have been available for a few years but thanks to a few great artists using these unique archtop guitars they have been resurrected! Fitted with a single vintage voiced P90 pickup and a classic build this guitar has some unique sounds that really push against what we think about hollow guitars.
The History This small, all hollow guitar design has been around since the mid 50’s when Gibson merged with Epiphone and started modifying some of the models to work better in the world of amplified guitar. With loads of different versions available throughout the years it was this simple one pickup version that has captured the world recently. Classic Hollow Build Like the classic ES bodies from Gibson and other hollow guitars from the 60’s this guitar has a laminated Maple body, making it strong with a bright sound that is surprisingly loud given the size of the body. The neck is carved out of Mahogany to a rounded C shape that is a really comfortable size that is neither to thick nor too thin making both chords and lead lines a breeze. The ESP LTD EX-360 Electric Guitar flexes its rock and roll muscle with its set maple neck, mahogany body, and EMG-81/60 active pickups. It features a traditional 24-3/4″ scale with a super-fast, thin, U-shaped neck contour; rosewood fretboard with 22 extra-jumbo frets; ESP tuners; Tune-o-matic-style bridge and tailpiece; and a toggle switch for volume and tone control.
